100% Open Source Mission

Okay so a while back I promised to keep everyone up to date on our mission to go 100% Open Source and well so far so good. First up was our two factor authentication system. We decided on WiKID Systems . They offer a 100% Open Source two factor authentication solution. It's not free but that's okay as it's pretty good. Install was extremely easy with their "appliance in an ISO", which I'm a big fan of. My only complaint is the monstrous amount of memory it uses but it can't help it as it's Java underneath. We should be completely cut over to it by Friday so expect another update then.

Now onto Java. As I've been looking at other applications that can help us better support our customers I've been struck by the number of applications written in Java so I just wanted to say to anyone reading -- JAVA IS NOT THE ONLY LANGUAGE OUT THERE, THERE ARE OTHERS, SOME BETTER!!! You could write smaller, better code with a smaller footprint but why when you can write simple applications with huge overhead. Stop the madness!! Okay enough ranting.

Thanks for the mention, Bill.

Just to be clear for your readers, our open source version is free in all the usual ways - a la beer & speech. The commercial version includes 3rd party software which is not available under an open source license. More info on the differences between the Community and Enterprise editions is here.

I hear what you're saying about Java as well, but we have a lot of experience there and we get a lot from it too. :).

I think there is also a value to having a commercial entity on such a project. I don't think (sadly) that there is enough community interest in two-factor authentication to maintain an enterprise quality product. I'm pleased with the contributions from the the community - tremendous support - but I don't think it would be enough to get the product where it is today. Thanks for your support!
